Pure Metals

Pure Metals

metalmen distributes a wide range of pure metals for all your application requirements. Pure metals are those metals that have not been alloyed with other metallic elements; commercially pure metals are 99% pure minimum. Some of the metals listed below are available as commercially pure and many can be manufactured to be extremely pure, often 99.999% minimum, referred to as “five nines min.”

For example, Aluminum 1100 is considered to be commercially pure aluminum – it is 99% pure minimum. Our high purity aluminum can be manufactured up to 99.999% pure. Please note that we will seek to attain the purity level that you request; for example, 99.9%, 99.99% min. If your application demands pure metals, call us or send us your request for quote (RFQ). Our staff is prepared to work with you to determine the purity or dimensional options available to get you the pure materials that you need. Please note that not all metals can be made in all form at high purities.

Below is a list of all of those pure metals we offer. However, our manufacturing partners can do more than what’s on the list. If you require a metallic element and don’t see what you’re looking for, make sure to ask!

Aluminum
As stated earlier, alum 1100, often referred to as commercially pure, is at least 99% pure aluminum. Its other main components are copper (.05% to .2%), silicon + iron (.95% max), manganese (.05% max), zinc (.1% max) and residuals (.15% max). Alum 1100 is the strongest of the 1000-series aluminums. Yet, it maintains the other benefits of lightly alloyed aluminum, such as high thermal conductivity, high electrical conductivity, workability and corrosion resistance. Commercially pure aluminum 1100 is popular for use with: rivets, sheet metal, railroad tank cars, electrical uses, chemical equipment, dials, reflectors, name plates, sculpture armatures, and cooking utensils. The other 1000 series aluminum – Al 1145 – is widely available as light gauge foil. High Pure Aluminum up to 99.999% minimum can be manufactured in most forms – please inquire.

Copper
Commercially pure coppers are represented by the designations C10100 to C13000 with Copper 101 being the purest available in distribution. All of them are soft in the annealed condition, their other characteristics vary slightly because of their different levels of purity, or if manufactured with incremental temper. Pure copper is used for electrical contacts, cables, conductive wires and many other parts that must pass electrical current. High pure Coppers can be custom processed or manufactured – call to discuss your request.

Chromium
There are limits to what can be manufactured in pure Chrome due to the extremely brittle nature of this metal. Call us with min purity and dimensions. Our staff is happy to “field-test” your request.

Nickel
Nickel 200 is considered “commercially pure.” It is 99% pure. It offers good magnetostrictive, thermal, electrical and mechanical properties, as well as excellent corrosion resistance. In addition, it exhibits good solderability, weldability and ductility qualities. Most often, pure nickel is used to make: aerospace components, battery terminals/connections, electrical and electronic components and wires for heating elements. If higher purities are specified, call us to determine if your part can be manufactured.

Niobium/Columbium
Niobium, also known as Columbium, is an important metal for medical and scientific applications. Vacuum grade (minimum 99.8%) pure niobium is used for superalloy production. Pure niobium is also useful for creating superconducting magnets in medical and scientific equipment, and applying thin layers on glass and optics. It has excellent superconductor properties and maintains mechanical strength at high temperatures.

Iron
Pure iron is typically about 99.8% pure, with small amounts of carbon and manganese present and the traces of other elements. Pure iron has outstanding magnetic properties and excellent cold and hot forming capabilities. Commercially pure iron is suitable for welding projects of all kinds, and is used to manufacture items such as: MRI scanners, fuse wire, lighting conductors, magnets, welding rods and gaskets. It is popular for use in the petrochemical, automotive, aviation and construction industries.

Magnesium
High pure Magnesium can be processed into many different forms within certain dimensional limits. Lower purity Magnesium around 95% (basically an alloy) is widely available as rod, sheet and plate.

Molybdenum

Silver

Tantalum
Pure tantalum (Ta), with a purity level upwards of 99.9%, is a rare, blue-gray and lustrous metal. Its atomic number is 73. It is highly corrosion resistant, ductile and it conducts electricity and heat very well. Most often, this metal is used in the production of capacitors, foil and some high-power resistor types and is used as an alloying element.

Titanium
There are three grades of commercially pure titanium available. Grade 1 is the softest and has the highest level of ductility. In addition, it has high impact strength, excellent corrosion resistance, superior welding characteristics and good cold forming properties. This grade of commercially pure titanium is best for medical, marine, architectural, chlorate manufacturing, dimensionally stable anode and automotive desalination applications.

Commercially pure titanium Grade 2 has moderate strength, excellent welding properties, superior cold forming properties and impressive corrosion and oxidation resistance. Grade 2 commercially pure titanium works well for applications in: aerospace, architecture, automotive engineering, desalination, chemical processing, chlorate manufacturing, healthcare, hydrocarbon processing, power generation and marine manufacturing.

Finally, Commercially Pure Titanium Grade 4 is highly corrosion resistant in a wide range of environments. It is also stronger than both CP Grades 2 and 3. It may be cold formed, but does not have as high ductility as the others. It is used most often with applications requiring high strength, such as industrial manufacturing, surgery and prosthesis, marine manufacturing, chemical processing and aerospace.

Tungsten
Tungsten is a metal element with the atomic number 74. It has the highest melting point of all the metals. It exhibits high density, good electrical resistivity at extremely high temperatures, uncommonly high strength and a low coefficient of thermal expansion. While tungsten can be quite hard to work with, it has many applications. These include the production of: heat shields, heat bodies, glass-to-metal seals, filaments, electrical contacts, radiation shielding, vacuum furnaces, crucibles, x-ray targets, medical devices, anodes and cathodes, electrodes and electronics.

Zirconium
Commercially pure zirconium (Grade 702) has excellent corrosion resistance and ductility, and mechanical properties quite similar to austenitic stainless steel and titanium. It is ideal for chemical processing equipment.
